Rockingham County Schools Social Media Threat Resolved without Incident

Eden, NC —

At 11:14 PM last night, Rockingham County Schools (RCS) received an anonymous tip about a social media threat of mass violence directed toward Western Rockingham Middle School (WRMS) and a teacher. RCS leadership took immediate action, notifying local, county and state law enforcement partners including the NC State Bureau of Investigation, who collaboratively initiated a thorough and comprehensive investigation.

After assessing the situation, RCS and law enforcement partners early this morning determined the threat was not credible. However, out of an abundance of caution, staff and families were notified of the social media threat and investigation, between 6:00 and 6:30 AM. Extra law enforcement personnel were present at WRMS during student arrival to ensure a secure environment until RCS and law enforcement completed the investigation.

During the morning, additional information identified the perpetrators as WRMS students. The Madison Police Department has filed juvenile petitions with the Rockingham County District Attorney’s Office for review and applicable charges for the students involved. Due to the ongoing legal process and privacy laws, RCS will not release further details.

Director of Safety Sean Gladieux stated, “At no time were students or staff in harm’s way. Our established safety protocols worked effectively and our partnership with law enforcement resulted in a positive and safe outcome. RCS is committed to maintaining a safe learning environment and appreciates the swift action and cooperation of our law enforcement partners.

Gladieux continued, “We encourage families and students to remain vigilant and continue reporting any safety concerns through appropriate channels. Always remember to Report, Don’t Repost.”
