Internet Safety & Digital Citizenship

As student move from the highly monitored and restricted school building digital environment to a remote learning environment that is outside the district control it is import for parents to develop insight into how to make their home digital environment safer for their kids as they spend more time online.

​While the RCS issued chromebooks have safety features installed that will help to protect students as they engage in online learning it is impossible to totally control what students may be able to access while on personal devicdes and/or personal home network.  It is very important for parents and guardians to monitor student online behaviors and websites being visited outside of the assignments given by teachers.  Please take the time to view the following resources:

In order to prepare students for a world connected by technology, teachers have to worked to teach the students skills to appropriately and responsibly utilize digital networks, resources, and media.  There were several digital citizenship lessons taught at the beginning of the school year and are revisited through the year in order to prepare students to use digital tools responsibly.  As a parent, it is important to review what it means for a student to be a responsible Digital Citizen.

Students in grades 6 - 12 may access Canvas, our district Learning Management System, to receive daily announcements, assignments, class resources, and grades from their chromebook. Students (and parent/guardian) can access their Canvas classes from any device 24/7 with single sign-in district log in the NCEDCloud HERE.
Student can also download the Student Canvas App to their phones.  Look for the Student Canvas App in your app store. 

Parents can monitor their student’s class activities, assignment due dates and grades.  Parents can download the Parent Canvas App to their phones.  Look for the Parent Canvas App in your app store and follow the directions above to pair with your student(s). 

You can submit a HELP ticket directly from Canvas for support in addition to contacting your teacher, school or the RCS Help Desk.

Students in grades K-12 can can sign in to Google Suite for education/Google Classroom HERE.  G Suite for Education includes Docs, Drive, Forms, Slides, Spreadsheets, and more.  Additionally, Google Classroom is used by teachers mostly with students in grades 3-8 to provide assignments and tasks. 

Access for Students in Grades 3-8- Student passwords are set to the student birthday- (Month, Day, Year, r, ?)

MMDDYYYYr?

(ex:  If student birthday is February 19, 2003 then their password would be 02192003r?)

Access for Students:

Username:  first part of their Rockingham County email address (do not include @rock.k12.nc.us)

Password: has not changed - same as throughout the school year - Contact your teacher or call your school if you can not remember your password.

Students in Grades 6-12 can access APEX assigned tutorials and/or coursework  HERE.  Students can focus on what they need to learn, not what they already know and get college and career ready in a personalize way. 

Student Access:

Username:  Student lunch number

Password: Passwords are randomly generated by APEX

Passwords can be reset and obtained by contacting your child's teacher or school.

Rockingham County Schools is pleased to offer our eBook program on Overdrive and the SORA app. Our digital collection contains over RCS digital 5700 titles and and the NC Kids Digital Library available for checkout. 

The web address for RCS’ digital library is website.

Students can more easily access book through SORA in your browser HERE or through the SORA App found in your apps store.  Digital books are filtered by SORA according to school age range. Help with SORA
