School Safety
Rockingham County Schools is committed to the safety and security of our students, staff and visitors. To support this commitment, RCS provides direct support to school and district administrators and maintains strategic partnerships with local and county law enforcement agencies and emergency response agencies throughout Rockingham County. RCS utilizes a comprehensive safety and security model with a multi-layered approach. Most recently, RCS has strengthened our school safety infrastructure by deploying new safety strategies including but not limited to clear bag policy at all athletic events, safety vestibules and weapons detection systems.
The Director of Safety maintains responsibility for the following areas:
- Emergency operations and safe school plans
- Emergency preparedness training, exercises and drills
- School Resource Officers
- Safety technology, including security cameras, alarms, access control and fire detection
- Site safety and security assessments
- Asset protection
All threats to Rockingham County Schools, staff, students or visitors are taken seriously and investigated by local law enforcement and RCS. If a threat of mass violence is identified, our law enforcement partners will coordinate with state and federal law enforcement. In North Carolina, it is a felony to make such threats, and anyone found to have communicated a threat is punished to the fullest extent of the law.
