English I CP

Through the study of various literary genres, recognize and use the elements of literature as a basis for writing assignments which will be edited for grammar and language conventions. Develop applied communications skills that includes the development of sentences, paragraphs, and short themes. Develop listening, speaking, and viewing skills. 

English I Honors

Prerequisite:  AG English in Grade 8 recommended

Develop critical reading skills through a study of various literary genres, with emphasis placed on independent reading, research, and vocabulary building. Writing will stress all language skills, especially those relating to grammar, editing, and composition. Develop listening, speaking, viewing skills. 

English II

Develop techniques of expository, narrative, persuasive, and descriptive writing with emphasis placed on developing critical reading and writing skills, and vocabulary building. Develop speaking, listening, and viewing skills. Prepare students for the EOC exam. 

English II Honors

Prerequisite: English I Honors Recommended

In this course designed for skilled writers and confident, effective readers, continue development of critical reading skills through a study of various genres from world literature. Develop skills in descriptive narrative, expository, and argumentative writing. Conduce library research and write a formal research paper. Develop speaking, listening, and viewing skills.  Prepare students for the EOC exam. 

English III

Develop critical reading and writing skills through the chronological study of American literature. Participate in applied communications skills that include essay testing, theme writing, and practical composition with emphasis placed on vocabulary development and grammar skills. Develop speaking, listening, and viewing skills. Develop and provide 4-5 page argumentative research essay.

English III Honors

English III AP

Prerequisite:  English II

Study a variety of texts and a variety of writing task with an emphasis on effective writing and critical reading. Acquire knowledge of the evolution of English prose style since the Middle Ages and develop an awareness of the expressive potential of language along with an ability to utilize some degree of that potential. With the teacher serving as discussion leader, questioner, critic, and scholar, assume much of the responsibility for your own learning. Confer with the teacher for assistance with your reading, writing, and rewriting. The Advanced Placement exam is required to receive AP credit; if the student does not take the exam, he or she will earn HN credit.

English IV

Study themes, genres, and historical periods and trace the scope and importance of English literature from the beginning of early English oral traditions through the twentieth century. Develop written compositions and a journal for recording personal responses as they relate to the study of literary selections. Complete all elements of Capstone Experience Project:  4-5 page research essay, work with expert to develop a product, create an e-portfolio and make a presentation.

English IV Honors

Use critical and creative skills in composition and literature, through the intense study of representative works from several genres and literary periods with the teacher serving as discussion leader, questioner, critic, and scholar. Assume responsibility for your own learning. Participate in extensive independent reading, writing, and research. Complete all elements of Capstone Experience Project:  8-10 page research essay, work with expert to develop a product, create an e-portfolio and make a presentation.

Pursue college-level studies while still in high school and received advanced placement credit upon entering college.
