Learning Environment

Monroeton provides a safe, clean and orderly school for its students and staff.  The atmosphere is conducive to learning and growing. The children are encouraged to care for and take pride in their school.

A positive staff welcomes children, parents, and community partners. The children receive care and guidance while engaged in active learning through various academic and extra-curricular activities. Our school encourages creativity and inspires children to take pride in their work, be responsible, and show respect. Everyone at Monroeton works cooperatively to achieve harmony and help students meet individual goals and expectations.

Monroeton Elementary School will be continuing a school wide behavior plan called "PBIS."  In order to help students and teachers both adapt to this new plan, we are implementing a few points of conscious discipline.

Teaching Strategies

Monroeton School uses a variety of teaching strategies. They include small group, one-on-one, whole group, peer tutors, cooperative learning groups, and volunteer tutors. Various teaching methods are utilized in the classroom including Four Block, Building Blocks, Write From the Beginning, Thinking Maps, Windows on Science, AIMS, Orchard, and Remediation.

Students are assessed on an ongoing basis. Assessments are a gauge for planning for further instruction. Assessments focus on curriculum that has been taught which is aligned with the NCSCOS. Assessments are both formal and informal and allow for individual learning styles to be addressed.

Staff Development & Learning

Staff development and learning is an active and ongoing process. Each year the staff focuses on specific areas depending on the school's and/or individual's needs.  The School Improvement Team and administration decide on these areas. The sharing of ideas and expertise among staff members is routine and expected at Monroeton Elementary School.  Staff development occurs on teacher workdays as often as possible, and at other times as needed. This year, staff will be participating in PLC's - Professional Learning Communities - to share even more ideas with other staff.

NC Standard Course of Study

The North Carolina Standard Course of Study (NCSCOS) defines the appropriate content standards for each grade or proficiency level and each high school course to provide a uniform set of learning standards for every public school in North Carolina. These standards define what students are expected to know and be able to do by the end of each school year or course.
