Stoneville Elementary School will now be a part of the Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program (FFVP). Thanks to a grant, thirteen elementary schools have been awarded a total of $326,996 to purchase fresh fruits and vegetables for student participation in the program, which will begin in October 2024. The Child Nutrition Department will order the food as they do our normal breakfast and lunch items.
The Child Nutrition Department has invested in bins and refrigerators to store the fruits and vegetables after they are prepared by our cafeteria staff. Classroom teachers will be responsible for picking up their designated bin at the end of lunch.
It is important to note that fruits and vegetables must be served within four hours of being removed from the refrigerator. The portion sizes will be small, such as a slice of apple or a slice of orange. The purpose of this program is to encourage students to try new fruits and vegetables; it is not intended to serve as a snack.
Head Start is also included in this initiative. A calendar detailing the foods that will be served will be shared shortly. We will kick off the program during the week of October 14.
Ms. Saeger may distribute worksheets or coloring sheets for students, but please note that teaching lessons is not a requirement.
