Good Evening students and parents,

This is Lauryn Duncan, Principal at Douglass Elementary School calling with a few announcements for the week. First, I want to officially welcome you to the start of the 2024-2025 school year. Our staff is excited to welcome our students back!

As you know, the first day of school is tomorrow, Monday, August 26th.  Doors will open for all students at 7:20 am and they may report directly to their classroom. Breakfast will be served to all students in their classrooms. Our tardy bell rings at 7:50 am each morning. Students arriving late to school must be signed in by a parent at our front desk.

As you arrive, parents are encouraged to use our morning car line for easy drop off but are allowed to park in the front lot and walk their student across our crosswalk to the front door. Parents will be allowed to walk their student to the classroom the first day of school. After the first day of school, all families will follow our normal morning drop-off procedures. Please be patient with school staff during the first few weeks of school as we will do our best to make morning arrival a speedy process.

As we dismiss school each afternoon, we ask all parents to use our drive through line. Walk-ups will not be allowed at afternoon dismissal.  School staff will safely load students into cars. Please be sure to place the student sign with your child’s name on it that you received at Open House, in the front windshield for easy dismissal. We appreciate your support with afternoon dismissal procedures.

Parents, breakfast and lunch are free to all students this year. However, a la carte items are still available for purchase in the cafeteria. Lunch accounts can be created and updated by visiting k12paymentcenter.com.

Kindergarten parents, please join us this Thursday, August 29th from 5pm-7pm for our Kindergarten Only Open House. Students and families will be able to view classroom rosters, meet your child’s teacher and access volunteer training provided by our school counselor, Mrs. Thackston. All kindergarten staff will be on hand to answer any questions you may have.

Parents, we will practice several school wide safety drills over the next two weeks at Douglass. Please know that our number one priority is the safety of our students and we will always make every effort to prepare for crisis situations. Although these situations are most often unpredictable, practicing with our students is very important.

We are very excited to share that we have officially begun our candy bar fundraiser. We were able to pass out 67 boxes at Open House of chocolate bars as students and families are eager to get started selling. Permission slips were in packets provided to parents at Open House and are available in the office. If your child is interested in selling candy bars please be sure to return the permission slip to your child’s teacher as soon as possible. Once a box has been sold please return the full amount of the box, which is $60 to the office. Remember unsold boxes or individual candy bars cannot be returned.

We hope you enjoy the last night of Summer Break and we look forward to seeing you bright and early tomorrow morning for the first day of school! Have a great evening!

Lauryn Duncan
