6TH GRADE SPORTS ELIGIBIITY
During the August 8, 2016 meeting of the Rockingham County School Board, Dr. Shotwell presented to the Board the state's approval for 6th grade athletic eligibility. Effective immediately, 6th grade students will be eligible to try out and participate in all sports, except FOOTBALL.
The following participation criteria has been established:
1. Effective 2016 - 2017 school year, only first semester 6th and 7th grade students are automatically eligible for participation, if this is their initial year in the 6th or 7th grade. Please note that after first semester, all academic, age, and attendance eligibility criteria will need to be met moving forward.
2. The RCS attendance requirement after the completion of the first semester is 85% of 84 semester days, which equals a maximum of 12.5 days absent, due to RCS being on a reduced calendar.
3. Rising 6th grade students will have 6 consecutive semesters of eligibility in middle school athletics upon initial entry into the 6th grade, effective this year, upon meeting age, attendance, and academic criteria.
4. Medical requirements prior to participation per policy has been extended to 395 days for physical exams.
