During the 8/8 RCS Board meeting, Dr. Shotwell presented to the board the state's approval for 6th grade athletic eligibility effective immediately for the 2016-17 school year. Based on the state's policy, 6th grade students will be eligible to tryout and participate in all sports, except FOOTBALL effective immediately.
The following criteria will be established effective immediately:
1. Effective 16-17 school year only (First Semester) 6th and 7th grade students are automatically eligible for participation, if this is their initial year in the 6th or 7th grade. Please note that after first semester, all academic, age, and attendance eligibility criteria will need to be met moving forward.
2. In RCS, the attendance requirement after the completion of the first semester is 85% of 84 semester days, which equals a maximum of 12.5 days absent, since RCS is on a reduced calendar.
3. Rising 6th grade students will have 6 consecutive semesters of eligibility in middle school athletics upon initial entry into the 6th grade, effective 16-17, upon meeting age, attendance, and academic criteria.
4. Medical requirements prior to participation per policy has been extended to 395 days for physical exams.
