Duane Whittaker

Mr. Whittaker

Duane Whittaker started as Principal in 2014 at McMichael High School, after working as Assistant Principal for two years. Mr. Whittaker has also worked at Bassett High School as a Social Studies teacher, Fieldale-Collinsville High School, Magna Vista High School, and Eastern View High School as an assistant principal, and Drewry Mason Middle School as a principal. He attended Bluefield College and received an undergraduate degree in Social Studies with a minor in Education. Later, he attended Radford University for a graduate degree in Educational Leadership. Mr. Whittaker’s favorite part of the McMichael community is how nice the students are. “I feel very fortunate to be able to come to work in such a great place.”

Mr. Whittaker’s biggest influence to go into education were two of his college professors, Dr. Stuart McGhee and Dr. David Armbrister.  What inspires him to work with younger generations is trying to help them get to the next level, whether it be college, the military, or the work force. “I never want any of our students to be forced to settle for something less. I want them to be able to choose their future, not have their future choose them because they weren’t successful in high school.”

While Mr. Whittaker isn’t at school, he enjoys spending time with his family. His wife, Jenny, and his three children, Bennett, Taylor, and Spencer make his day. His favorite moment is sitting at the table with all of them and talking about what is happening in their lives. While he is in school, the responsibilities seem endless. He is responsible for everything that goes on at our school, which can be overwhelming at times. Luckily, he has the pleasure of working with a wonderful staff! The teachers are always helping students get where they need to be, and his Assistant Principals take care of many things quick and efficiently. “The staff is so dedicated to helping our students from the moment they walk through the door until they leave in the afternoon.” Mr. Whittaker believes McMichael is one of a kind, I believe it is because we have him as a principal!
